NEWSDr. José M. Ordovás receives the Second Gregorio Varela Mosquera Award.
The Spanish scientist received the award on June 9th during a ceremony held during the Annual Session of the Spanish Academy of Food and Nutrition in the Yellow Room of the Royal Academy of Pharmacy. He was also named honorary academic of the Academy.Doctor Ordovás is Professor of Nutrition and a Senior Scientist at the USDA-Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts where he also is the Director of the Nutrition and Genomics Laboratory. He is a Senior Scientist at the CNIC, Madrid.
He obtained his degree in chemistry in 1978 and his doctorate in biochemistry, both from the University of Zaragoza. His main research focuses on the close relationship between nutrigenomics and the emergence of cardiovascular disease and obesity. He has published over 500 articles in various scientific journals and has been honoured with numerous awards throughout his career.
The Mediterranean Diet Foundation (FDM), the Spanish Nutrition Foundation (FEN)and the International Food and Beverage Exhibition in Barcelona, Alimentaria, instituted two years ago the Gregorio Varela Mosquera Award to distinguish personalities from the scientific and academic world for their contribution to a better understanding and dissemination of healthy eating and the Mediterranean Diet, which also takes into account the human and personal qualities of the honouree, beyond their professional career. The First Gregorio Varela Mosquera Award was given to Dr. José Mataix in 2008.
