The Department of Fine Arts and Cultural Goods of the General Branch of the Institute of Cultural Heritage of Spain hosted, together with the General Department of Museums and the General Department of Heritage, a Conference on the Protection of Intangible Heritage held from October 14th to 16th in Teruel.

This conference was attended by representatives of Cultural Heritage Directorates General of the different Autonomous Communities and Intangible Heritage experts. Joan Reguant, the FDM coordinator of cultural projects participated during the second day, with the speech entitled: The Mediterranean Diet, transversal, everyday and transnational heritage. Also attending the conference was Mr. Francisco Sensat, vice president of the FDM.

The main objective was to analyze the management policy in Spain that is carried out with this type of heritage and the development of a text in which some recommendations will be reflected on the criteria that should govern theses proceedings.

Intangible Heritage is one of the most significant manifestations of Spanish culture. However, the lack of consideration of its inherent values has supposed until not too long ago, a policy of inaction in relation to their treatment. Fortunately today the situation shows clear signs of change. Internationally, the UNESCO adopted the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Heritage in 2003. Covered by this international push and pursuant to the provisions of the Convention, ratified by the Government of Spain, the Spanish public administrations have begun to develop strategies for the preservation and enhancement of Intangible Heritage.
