Mediterranean Diet Congress

Since 1996, every two years, the city of Barcelona has the honour of congregating experts of different fields and disciplines – governmental organizations, food industry associations, culinary experts, and academic and professional experts – to express the multidisciplinary nature of the impact of dietary habits on health and the influence of history and culture on food in the Mediterranean.

Grande Covian Award

Professor Francisco Grande Covián (1908-1995 Asturias, Spain), is considered one of the world’s leading experts in biochemistry and nutrition and a strong advocate of the Mediterranean Diet and the benefits of the variety of different foods that constitutes it. In 1996 the decided to institute the Grande Covian Award, in order to distinguish a personality from the scientific world for his/her contribution to a better understanding of the influence of the Mediterranean Diet on health. This distinction also values personal qualities beyond their career. The Grande Covian Award recipient becomes an Honorary President of the FDM Scientific Committee.

Honorary Diplomas

In early 2002, the Mediterreanean Diet Foundation (FDM) decided to grant, in addition to the Grande Covian Award, the Honorary Diplomas to recognize the careers of personalities from other fields who have contributed to the dissemination of the Mediterranean culture. These diplomas are granted at the same awards ceremony as the Grande Covian Award at each of the congresses organized by the FDM.
